There are certain songs or certain bands that reach up, grab me, reel me in, and never let me go. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does — it’s memorable. The latest group to really get me fired up is The Lumineers. Their hit song is called ‘Ho Hey’ (it’s played all the time on the radio now), but The Lumineers have so much more to offer than that.
My introduction to The Lumineers starts with a pretty funny story: I was out with a friend one night and we came back to my place to jam some tunes. Before I could get my iTunes rolling, I turned on one of the music channels on my TV to keep us company. The first song that played was ‘Ho Hey’ by The Lumineers. It was the first time I’d ever heard the song, but it immediately grabbed my attention. I quickly jumped onto the iStore to download ’Ho Hey’ (thinking I may never hear it again) – or at least I thought I did. I accidentally downloaded a different Lumineers song called ‘Dead Sea’ instead. I was ticked at myself for wasting $1.29 on a song I’d never heard before (and was sure I wasn’t going to like), but I eventually got over it and downloaded ‘Ho Hey’ as well.
It wasn’t until the next day that I went back to listen to The Lumineers again. I started with ‘Ho Hey’ (because it was the song that lured me in to begin with), but then I figured I should give ‘Dead Sea’ a chance (since I downloaded it). I couldn’t believe it — I actually liked ‘Dead Sea’ better than ‘Ho Hey’. It wasn’t a waste of money after all. ‘Dead Sea’ instantly became my jam. I listened to it every day before work. Little did I know (but I should have guessed) the entire Lumineers album (also called The Lumineers — it’s their debut album) is awesome. My friend Tove finally introduced me to the rest of the songs, and now I’m hooked (I’m listening to them as I write this).
Like I mentioned, ‘Ho Hey’ is The Lumineers hit, but I like several other songs on the album. ‘Big Parade’, ‘Morning Song’, ‘Flowers in Your Hair’, and of course ‘Dead Sea’ are my other favorites. It’s rare that I say this (and it’s a huge reason I don’t buy an entire album often), but there honestly isn’t one jam on The Lumineers album that I don’t like. I can’t wait to see what they come out with next.
Have you listened to The Lumineers? What do you think of them (it’s OK if you don’t have the same taste for music that I do)? If you like them, what’s your favorite song? I’d love to hear from you!
