I Can’t Get Away From ‘Call Me Maybe’

I’m not sure how I went so long without hearing the song Call Me Maybe. I heard plenty of people talking about it, but I never actually listened to the song with my own ears. That’s changed now. I heard it once (thanks — or no thanks – to my friend Tove) and now I can’t get away from it.

I’m old school in the sense that I don’t listen to my iPod in my car (unless it’s a long road trip), I just flip through the radio stations in hopes of finding something good. That usually provides great variety, but now it means is I hear Call Me Maybe all the time. I honestly think they play it every minute on the minute on the radio. If it’s not on one station — it’s on another. Sometimes I can hear it on two different stations at the same time. I don’t even have the radio on right now and it’s echoing in my brain.

I know everything about the song now too. I know Carly Rae Jepsen is the singer. I know she finished third on Canadian Idol. I know the Harvard baseball team posted a dance video to Call Me Maybe on YouTube, and that’s since been duplicated by everyone and their sister (including the Spokane Chiefs – a minor league hockey team I used to cover). My dad just told me it was the top song for the fifth straight week on the satellite radio show he listens to. And finally, my friend Liz tells me, “This song is soooo in right now.”

I hate to admit this, but I actually didn’t mind Call Me Maybe when I first heard it, but now I want to get as far away from it as possible. If it’s really the “song of the summer,” I know I have a few more months of this. But, just like every hit song, it has to fade away at some point. I just hope it’s sooner rather than later.
