Beastie Boys | ‘Fight For Your Right’ Was A Parody

Did you know the Beastie Boys hit song ‘Fight for Your Right’ was actually making fun of party animals? No, I’m not kidding. I honestly didn’t know that myself until I read an article online about a year ago. It’s funny when I tell people that now, because they don’t believe me. But — trust me — it’s absolutely true — ‘Fight for Your Right’ was meant to be a parody.

“You gotta fight for your right to party” are the eight words that made the Beastie Boys famous. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame lists ‘Fight for Your Right’ as the single most influential Beastie Boys song ever, and also names it one of the top 500 songs that shaped rock and roll. Released in 1987, ‘Fight for Your Right’ was meant to parody 1980s party songs like Motley Crue’s ’Smokin in the Boys Room’ and Twisted Sister’s ’I Wanna Rock.’ In other words, it was intended to make fun of drunk meatheads – instead it encouraged them (and it still does today — and probably will for another 25 years).

According to an article on Cracked.com, the Beastie Boys hated so much that ‘Fight for Your Right’ became a party anthem that they stopped playing it live after 1987. Michael Diamond, better known ‘Mike D’, once said, “The only thing that upsets me is that we might have reinforced certain values of some people in our audience when our own values were actually totally different. There were tons of guys singing along to ‘Fight for Your Right’ who were oblivious to the fact it was a total goof on them.”

Even years after the song became a hit, the Beastie Boys still weren’t afraid to poke fun at ‘Fight for Your Right.’ Adam Yauch, also known as ‘MCA’, wrote and directed a short-film last year called ‘Fight for Your Right Revisited’ (to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the famous (or infamous) ‘Fight for Your Right’ music video). Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, Elijah Wood, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and Jack Black all star in the short, and several other celebrities make a cameo appearance throughout the film. I didn’t even realize ’Fight for Your Right Revisited’ existed until yesterday when I was randomly searching the web with my brother (which also prompted this post). The short-film is about 30 minutes long, but I think it’s worth watching (with that said, I know plenty of people will think it’s stupid — remember – I have a weird sense of humor).
